February is American Heart Month in the U.S. Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.? And, around the world, cardiovascular diseases cause more than 17 million deaths every year. Many of these deaths are from heart attacks and strokes. This month is the perfect time to raise awareness about heart disease and learn how to keep your heart healthy.

Visit your doctor regularly to have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked. You should also talk to your doctor about any other health concerns you have. It’s important to lower your risk for heart disease by eating healthy, staying active and not smoking.

Many heart diseases are preventable by living a healthy lifestyle. One important part of a healthy lifestyle is getting physical activity. This may seem like a no-brainer, but many adults don’t get enough exercise. Regular exercise helps control weight, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. All of which can lead to heart disease. Experts recommend getting at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate exercise every week. That’s as easy as taking a 30-minute brisk walk each day!
